"The feeling of sleepiness when you are not in bed, and can't get there, is the meanest feeling in the world."
-Edgar Watson Howe
Sleep is one of the most important things for our mind, body and spirit, and its quality is just as important as quantity. This knowledge is common, and yet when asked most people admit that they either do not place a high enough priority on sleep or that, try as they might, they just cannot get proper rest.
Everyone has experienced at least one night of sleeplessness, where you just can't get comfortable or can't coax your brain to rest. We can recover from a night like this here and there, but when it becomes the norm our health will begin to suffer and it can create a cycle of frustration and fatigue.
Fortunately, as long as you are willing to search for them, there are solutions! Several tips we have tried for more consistent, quality rest are:
1. Refraining from using electronics 30 minutes before you lay your head to rest. The glowing screens from electronics send a signal to your brain that tells it to 'wake up.'
2. Work on maintaining a proper diet and exercise routine. Believe it or not, eating well and getting the right kind of exercise will train you body to have a better night's rest. Exercise reduces stress, and less stress equals better sleep.
3. Try the natural method of melatonin or other dream solution products. There are many products to help you fall asleep naturally, so research those options and be sure to find the best fit for you. As always, be sure to discuss any changes to your health regimen with your doctor.
